In
1864, President Abraham Lincoln concluded that America’s
great scenic resources were neither unlimited nor indestructible.
He summoned the courage to do what no previous individual
had ever done: to set aside a piece of wilderness—Yosemite
Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias—”for
public use, resort and recreation” with the intention
that they “shall be inalienable for all time.”
It was the birth of a bold new concept, the withdrawal
of land from private ownership to be used for public
use and preservation. Through many decades his wisdom
has proven invaluable, for America now has the finest
system of national parks and recreation areas in the
world.
