When
most people think of birding on Delmarva, they envision
ducks, geese, and long-legged wading birds such as herons
and egrets. That’s understandable. Most of the
natural areas on Delmarva are home to waterfowl and
wading birds. Visit Bombay Hook, Blackwater, or Chincoteague
National Wildlife Refuges, and you leave with a vivid
impressions of snow geese, Canada geese, and great blue
herons.
But
the bird life of Delmarva is much more varied than that,
ranging from waterfowl to colorful woodland warblers
that have a decidedly tropical look. The checklist published
by Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, alone, names
more than 300 species that mey be spotted there.
At
Chincoteague, Blackwater, and Bombay Hook, waterfowl
and wading birds are easy to see; you don’t have
to leave the comfort of your car. But please park that
car, put on your walking shoes, and get out n the woods,
especially in spring and fall when the songbird migration
is at its peak. Only then will you appreciate the remarkable
diversity of bird life on the Delmarva Peninsula.
While
wildlife refuges on the coast were built with waterfowl
in mind, most of them support a healthy songbird population,
and natural resource managers have made it easy to see
them by building hiking paths through wooded areas and
thickets where the birds congregate. Assateague Island,
Kiptopeke, Bombay Hook, Pocomoke River State Park, Pickering
Creek, and many other sanctuaries on Delmarva are excellent
places to see migrating songbirds, and the trails make
viewing easy. Bring your binoculars and field guides,
and learn about an exciting aspect of bird life on Delmarva.
